C. difficile rates rising in community

Community-associated C. difficile infection (CA-CDI) accounted for around a quarter of the 12,683 cases of hospital-identified infection (HI-CDI) and increased by 24% during the two-year study, compared to an 18% increase in hospital-acquired infection.

The results, from surveillance programs at 450 public hospitals which began in 2011, prompted a warning from Professor Thomas Riley, of the University of Western Australia (UWA), for GPs to be on heightened alert for C. difficile.
