Calcium beats vit D to reduce bone turnover
However, US researchers found a significant decline in bone turnover markers among women who were given daily calcium supplements.
Almost 160 women were divided into four groups and given vitamin D plus calcium, 1200mg calcium daily, 4000IU of vitamin D daily or placebo. Bone turnover markers, such as parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels, were measured over six months.
A decline in bone turnover markers was found among women who were given daily calcium supplements. Vitamin D supplements decreased PTH levels but did not have a significant effect on bone turnover markers.
The authors said the interaction between vitamin D and calcium to suppress bone turnover by decreasing PTH levels could be beneficial in women who are vitamin D deficient.
However, adding a vitamin D supplement when women were already getting
