Call for action on toxic plant medicine

In an international collaborative effort researchers based at King’s College, London, led a review of exposure to aristolochic acid, a plant-based compound found in widely available remedies used for a range of conditions including slimming, asthma and arthritis.

The compound found in plants such as A. clematitis or birthwort, is banned in the US and much of Europe but still widely used in China and India and can be bought on the Internet.
