Call to overcome barriers to tobacco law reform

More than half the tobacco in the world is consumed in Asia and most of the six million annual deaths linked to tobacco are in Asia, the researchers noted.

Rates of smoking have halved in Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Australia and NZ since the 1980s, researchers said, but major obstacles to prevention in the region include legal challenges by tobacco companies in many countries including India, Indonesia and the Philippines, and a failure to implement tax reforms.
