Call for palliative care in the emergency room

A US pilot study suggests triggering a palliative care assessment on admission to the emergency department improves advanced cancer patients’ quality of life, but an Australian expert has reservations.

The single-blind randomised trial of 69 patients allocated to a palliative care team on admission to ED and 67 to usual care showed those given a palliative care intervention score better on the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy – General (FACT-G) measure.
