Call to review metformin PI

In a study of more than 6000 Australians undergoing medication reviews, researchers found that 12.4% were being prescribed metformin in defiance of contraindications or in doses considered excessive for their renal function. 

This “potentially inappropriate prescribing” was as high as 17.4% for patients in aged care. 

But it may be the contraindications which need revision rather than prescribers’ habits, study author Professor Gregory Peterson said.
