Cancer legacy for Chernobyl clean-up

US researchers followed 110,645 workers for 20 years, finding 137 cases of leukaemia, of which 16% were related to radiation exposure from Chernobyl.

Importantly they found cases of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, which many experts did not consider to be associated with radiation exposure.

The study highlighted the risks associated with low-dose exposure, an issue of importance to miners, nuclear workers and patients exposed through diagnostic tests.
