In cardioversion, size matters

In the biphasic cardioversion of patients in atrial arrhythmia, shock energy levels must be tailored to patient weight, say South Australian researchers.

Their five-year, single-centre study of consecutive patients looked at over 480 cardioversions, 73% of which were successful with a single shock.

Overall, 88% cardioversions were successful, with the number of shocks needed ranging from one to five.
