Cartilage could be a villain in RA joint destruction

Cartilage is not just the victim of rheumatoid arthritis, it also plays an active role in joint degradation and remodelling, say Melbourne scientists.

Published in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatology, their study looks at the role of suppressor of cytokine signalling 3 (SCOS-3) molecules in controlling messaging between cells regulating inflammation in RA.

Lead researcher Xiao Liu (pictured) of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research says although cartilage was previously considered a victim of an overzealous immune system in RA, it seems this not quite the case.
