Caution urged on focal therapy for prostate ca
A UK Medical Research Council-funded study at University College Hospital, London, showed that side-effects of incontinence and impotence were significantly reduced using high intensity focused ultrasound treatment (HIFU).
But Dr Phillip Katelaris, a urologist at Sydney Adventist Hospital and the director of prostate cancer research for the Institute of Magnetic Resonance, urged caution.
“This kind of focal therapy has been around for about 10 years,” he said. “It reached a peak in Australia about five years ago, but few doctors continue to use it.”
