Caution urged for glutamine add-on to metformin

Adding glutamine to metformin for well-controlled type 2 diabetes patients reduces glycaemia but may not be so good for blood plasma volume, according to a small Australian study.

Researchers led by Dr Dorit Samocha-Bonet (pictured) and Associate Professor Jerry Greenfield from the Garvan Institute of Medical Research gave 13 patients with HbA1c of 7% on average either 15g of glutamine with breakfast and dinner (total 30g daily) and 100mg/d of sitagliptin or the same amount of glutamine and placebo for four weeks.
