CBT superior to add-on drug for OCD

The eight-week trial in 100 OCD patients randomised to either risperidone, placebo or CBT consisting of exposure and ritual prevention, showed the CBT group had greater reductions in OCD severity scores compared with placebo or risperidone.

All patients were receiving SSRIs, and 80% of those in the CBT group responded to treatment, compared with 23% of those in the risperidone group and 15% in the placebo group.

The authors said the findings were important because antipsychotics were increasingly being prescribed to OCD
