Childhood antibiotic exposure increases IBD: study

US researchers examined the medical records of more than a million UK children who were 17 years or younger.

They found that children exposed to anti-anaerobic antibiotics before the age of one were 5.5 times more likely to develop IBD, those exposed younger than five had double the risk and those younger than 15 were 57% more likely to develop IBD.

Furthermore, each course of antibiotics increased the chances of developing IBD by 6%.

“It’s a nicely done study,” Dr Daniel (Avi) Lemberg, the head of the department of
