Childhood illnesses linked with AS

Researchers trying to unravel the mysterious aetiology of ankylosing spondylitis have two more clues in the results of a Swedish study.

Appendicitis in childhood appears to reduce the odds of getting AS later in life by 40%, while being hospitalised for a childhood respiratory tract infection increases AS likelihood by 20%, researchers from the University of Gothenburg told delegates at EULAR 2016 in London.
