Cholesterol and mortality study causes a stir

A SYSTEMATIC review showing high LDL cholesterol is inversely associated with mortality in the elderly is grounds for re-evaluating the widespread prescription of statins, researchers say.

An international group of researchers, 10 of whom are members of the International Network of Cholesterol Skeptics reviewed 19 cohort studies with more than 68,000 people older than 60.

They found, in the first systematic review of cohort studies evaluating the subject, that elevated LDL cholesterol is inversely associated with all-cause mortality in most elderly
