Chronic pain all in the brain

A leading international expert has called on doctors to take a bigger picture view of pain in their patients.

Professor Daniel Clauw, a Professor of Anaesthesiology and Rheumatology at the University of Michigan in the US, said the historical view of finding the cause of pain in the location where the patient is experiencing pain may be fundamentally flawed.

He said evidence now suggests that a lot of pain comes from the brain and spinal cord and is more about a difference in how individuals sense pain.
