Chronic pain linked to heavy alcohol use in elderly men
Among a random sample of 1700 men in Sydney, researchers found men from an Italian background were likely to self-report daily drinking, and those with chronic pain were 38% more likely than others to drink daily.
The prevalence of binge drinking was about 14% and declined with age.
Bingeing was linked to anxiety and widowhood.
Smoking also declined with age, with 6% of men being current smokers and 57% being former smokers.
