CKD risk lowered by healthy diet and moderate alcohol

Among more than 6000 patients enrolled in a multi-country drug trial, those on the healthiest diets had a 39% decreased risk of mortality and a 26% decreased risk of developing CKD.

A diet including more than three servings of fruit per week was protective, the study found.

Neither a low protein nor a low sodium diet reduced incidence or progression of CKD, leading researchers to suggest patients should be advised to “avoid extremes” of protein and salt intake.
