CMV link to type 2 diabetes

Researchers analysed data from 549 adults older than 85 who had participated in a prospective population-based study in the Netherlands’ city of Leiden. About 80% were infected with cytomegalovirus (CMV). Among those who were infected with cytomegalovirus, 17.2% had type 2 diabetes, compared with 7.9% of participants who did not carry the virus.

In this group of “oldest olds”, those who carried the virus also had higher HbA1c levels and higher non-fasting glucose. The findings remained significant
