Coeliac disease significantly increases the risk of pancreatitis
Researchers analysed data from 29,000 patients with the disease, identified through small intestinal biopsy records. Biopsies were performed from 1969 to 2008 and report data were collected from 2006 to 2008.
Some 406 people with coeliac disease were later diagnosed with pancreatitis and 143 with expected pancreatitis.
The absolute risk for any pancreatitis was 126 per 100,000 person-years with an excess risk of 81/100,000 person-years. The risk of any pancreatitis within five years of coeliac diagnosis was 2.76.
