Coeliac gene test ‘pretty useless’

A study of a new approach to detecting the disease, which combines the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genetic test with traditional antibody testing, has revealed it is far more common in Australia than previously thought.

Researchers tested more than 2500 Victorians with the new combined approach to reveal that more than half had genetic risk factors for developing the disease.

It is now thought to potentially affect at least one in 60 women and one in 80 men, compared to previous estimates of no more than one in 100 Australians.
