People with coeliac disease have double the risk of coronary artery disease compared to the general population, new US research suggests.

They may also a higher risk of stroke, according to the study presented this week in Washington at the meeting of the American College of Cardiology.
Co-author Dr Rama Gajulapalli of the Cleveland Clinic said coeliac patients may have persistent low-grade inflammation which can accelerate the process of atherosclerosis.
