Cognitive impairment rises with metformin

The combined analysis of four studies found cognitive impairment was attenuated in those taking metformin when serum vitamin B12 levels were normal, compared to those not taking metformin.

The study, which included 480 patients with Alzheimer’s disease, 187 patients with mild cognitive impairment and 687 cognitively intact patients, showed that in those with diabetes, using calcium supplements lowered the risk of impaired cognitive function by 53%.

There were 104 people with type 2 diabetes and 22 with impaired glucose tolerance
