Concern over multidrug-resistant salmonella
EUROPEAN researchers are warning a multidrug-resistant strain of salmonella may spread globally if food, agricultural and health authorities don't take control measures.
Some 500 patients were infected by the ciprofloxacin-resistant strain, S. kentucky, in Europe between 2000 and 2008 and infections have also been seen in Africa and the Middle East.
The strain was also identified in chickens and turkeys in Morocco and Nigeria, suggesting common use of fluoroquinolones in these countries may have contributed to a rapid spread.
Experts are concerned the strain may cause similar havoc to another multi-resistant
