Confidential care ‘rare’ in teens with diabetes

Adolescents with type 1 diabetes rarely see their endocrinologist without a parent present, finds a Melbourne study that raises a number of conflicts about confidential care in this setting.

The survey of 137 parents of adolescents with type 1 diabetes revealed that contrary to current guidelines, only 13% of patients who were aged between 12 and 21 years had been seen alone by their endocrinologist.
This figure was significantly lower than other adolescent medicine services within the same hospital
