Confusion over HbA1c test rules

PRIMARY care use of the HbA1c test for diagnosis may be lagging, with more clarity needed on the rebate rules, diabetologists say.

The Australian Diabetes Society (ADS) has developed a guide to raise awareness of the availability of the test and to address some of the potentially confusing aspects of the “incredibly succinct” MBS entry, lead author Associate Professor Michael d’Emden says.

Professor d’Emden, chair of the HbA1c committee of the ADS, says HbA1c is a “far more practical test” than an oral glucose
