COVID-19 ‘deadlier than other pneumonias’ in older adults

COVID-19 is associated with significantly higher mortality in older adults in the ICU versus pneumonias from bacterial or other viral aetiologies, according to a study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.
Dr Lenneke Haas, from Diakonessenhuis in Utrecht, Netherlands, and colleagues compared outcomes of 5094 patients aged 70 and older admitted to Dutch ICUs with COVID-19 versus patients aged 70 and older admitted to the ICU for bacterial and other viral pneumonias (6646 patients).
