The danger of dentures
Ill-fitting dentures are a significant risk factor for oral cancer, says Australian researcher Dr Guy Eslick.
They can cause chronic mucosal irritation, which leads to precancerous lesions, according to his meta-analysis of nine US, South American, Asian and European studies.
While any denture use is associated with a greater chance of cancer, the risk increases four-fold for those with a poor fit. The study did not find a link between duration of denture use and cancer.
