Deadly new C. diff strain identified
Researchers have identified a new hypervirulent strain of Clostridium difficile following a recent infectious outbreak in Melbourne.
Stool samples were collected from patients suspected of C. diff infection and of 385 confirmed specimens, 12 were of a new strain named RT244.
This strain was associated with more severe disease and a higher death rate, probably due to a novel toxin B variant it produced, researchers from Monash University wrote.
