Deaths due to overtreating aortic aneurysm

Public health experts from Denmark and Sweden say that while abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is associated with an 80% mortality rate, most screen-detected AAAs are too small to be at risk of rupture and are very slow-growing.

They said screening programs increased preventive surgery, which can have complications and can leave many asymptomatic men labelled at risk of a life-threatening condition for which they will be under lifelong surveillance.
