Dementia rates far higher in Indigenous people

Indigenous people in the Northern Territory are around three times more likely to develop dementia compared to non-Indigenous Territorians, according to new research published in the MJA this week.

Data from 780 cases of dementia diagnosed between 2008 and 2011 showed the prevalence in people over 45 five to be 1.6 per 100.

However there was a stark disparity in the dementia prevalence rates for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, which were 1.1 and and 3.7,
