Dengue fever skyrockets among Aussies

The risk of local transmission in Australia is a concern, and there is now a risk of dengue becoming endemic in Queensland, according to a report from the National Arbovirus and Malaria Advisory Committee and the WA health department.

With an average of 144 imported cases every month during the first seven months of last year, the researchers urged travellers to take appropriate precautions against mosquito bites in South-East Asia.

The number of cases acquired overseas in 2010 and 2011 increased by 298% and 155% respectively, compared with the five-year mean.
