Depression in IBD revised up

Over 20% of people with inflammatory bowel disease suffer from depression, according to new US research has found.

The study of over 600 patients found the rate of depression was significantly higher than in previous survey-based reports.

Independent predictors of depression in IBD were female gender and aggressive or active disease.

Of the patients who were diagnosed with a depressive disorder, around two thirds received pharmacological therapy with one or more psychotropic drugs.
