Depression in spouses

Spouses of older patients with poorly controlled diabetes are prone to depression.

The distress and depressive symptoms, such as irritability and sadness, that spouses feel are comparable with those experienced by the patients themselves, a Purdue University study of 185 couples aged over 50 has found.

Among the patients, males who weren’t managing their disease well had greater symptoms than women, but there was no apparent gender difference among the spouses. Only couples with one partner having diabetes were included in the research.
