DePuy hip implant case sparks objections

A landmark $250 million settlement for Australians fitted with the notorious ASR hip implant represents adequate compensation, a judge has ruled, despite objections from patients who believe the payout is too small.

The hip implant, described by one expert as “perhaps the biggest disaster in the history of orthopaedics”, was withdrawn from the Australian market in 2009 due to high surgery revision rates and recalled worldwide a year later.
