Diabetes awareness vital in heart failure
The Danish study in 100,000 patients with heart failure showed that, compared with patients who did not use loop diuretics (a measure of heart failure severity), those using up to 40mg loop diuretics per day had a 16% increased risk of diabetes.
Diabetes risk was 35% higher in the 40–80mg per day loop diuretic group, 48% higher in the 80–159mg per day group and 76% higher in the group using 160mg per day or more.
Patients with heart failure should be monitored to prevent diabetes, the authors said. One researcher received funding from Novo Nordisk.
