Diabetes risk hike with early menarche

The prospective case-cohort study in 15,000 women showed those who reached menarche in the earliest quintile, between eight and 11 years of age, had a 70% higher incidence of type 2 diabetes, compared with those reaching menarche at age 13.

Each year of later menarche was associated with a 0.32 kg/m2 lower adult BMI and adjusting for BMI attenuated the increased risk of type 2 diabetes with early menarche down to 42%.

However after age 13, menarche at older ages was not protective against diabetes.
