'Diabetes surgery' may negate stigma

WITH fresh evidence for the benefit of bariatric surgery for diabetes remission even at BMI <35, an Australian expert is calling for the procedure to be reframed as ‘diabetes surgery’ rather than ‘obesity surgery’.

In a study of 61 patients with type 2 diabetes, bariatric patients were significantly more likely to achieve partial or complete remission, weight loss and a reduction in medication compared with those in a lifestyle-only intervention over three years. Importantly, more than 40% of the participants had a BMI of between 30 and 35, the authors say.
