Diarrhoea costing Australian hospitals
Diarrhoea contracted in the community costs hospitals $75 million a year, according to research presented last week at the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases Meeting.
The study found the average cost per admission was $5600, with older people and those with underlying conditions most at risk.
Lead author Dr Belinda Lin from Melbourne’s Western Health said an ageing population with high comorbidity rates meant conditions like diarrhoea were having a larger health economic impact.
