Dietary guidelines likely to be ignored

The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) released its draft Australian Dietary Guidelines on Tuesday with a call for public input.

The updated guidelines restate the importance of physical activity and daily consumption across the “five food groups”, while limiting intake of “foods and drinks containing saturated and trans-fats, added salt, added sugars and alcohol”.

It is an amalgamation of separate guidance into one document – including 2003’s Dietary Guidelines for Adults and Dietary Guidelines for Children and Adolescents and 1999’s Dietary Guidelines for Older Australians.
Guidelines working committee chair Dr Amanda Lee said it would “cut through all the misinformation about diet” and help Australians to “reduce risk of chronic disease”.
