Diverticulitis: surgery or watchful waiting?

Patients who have elective surgery for recurrent and ongoing left-sided diverticulitis tend to do better than those who are conservatively managed, Dutch researchers have found.

Their randomised trial, the first to directly compare surgery and conservative management, found that patients allocated to sigmoidoscopy scored much better on the commonly used Gastrointestinal Quality of Life Index (GIQLI).

At six months, the difference in
