DNA fast test to fight gastro outbreak at Games

After seven years of preparation, the UK Health Protection Agency (HPA) announced at a press conference earlier this month that it is “Games ready” to monitor and respond rapidly to any outbreaks of infectious diseases.

Professor Maria Zambon, the HPA’s director of reference microbiological services, said using nucleic acid testing (NAT) for GI disease-causing pathogens would cut detection time to six to eight hours, compared with 48 hours required to detect a culprit by culturing it.
