Using a general practice research database, they identified patients, over the age of 45 years, with pneumonia. They matched each case with five controls from the same practices.

Over a decade, there were 22,498 cases of pneumonia. The median age of these patients was 74 years.

Among the cases for which information was available, 12.6% had taken a statin during the previous year. Only 10.9% of the 80,484 people in the control group had taken statins.
