Doctors flout NSAIDs prescription guidelines: study

Elderly Australians are taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for too long and without adequate precautions to prevent side-effects, according to a study of more than 1500 Sydney men.

For men aged 70 and older, mean duration of treatment was five years, although Australian and international guidelines suggest short-term treatment with doses taken as needed.
