Don't be complacent on leprosy: WHO experts

The World Health Organization (WHO) said leprosy hotspots remained despite the region meeting an overall elimination target, set in 1991, of less than one case per 10,000 in the population.

“My fear is that our commendable achievement of the elimination target could be misinterpreted as true elimination and lead us down a path of complacency,” a WHO official said.

The Philippines, Cambodia, China, Micronesia, Kiribati, Laos, Malaysia, the Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea and Vietnam account for 95% of the region’s leprosy burden.
