Don’t count on orthopods

Most orthopaedic surgeons don’t know the cost of the devices they implant, research finds.

The survey of 503 surgeons found they got the cost of orthopaedic devices correct just 21% of the time. This was despite most believing that doctors should consider costs when selecting treatments, to keep healthcare spending down. “By undervaluing high-cost items and overvaluing low-cost items, physicians may underestimate the amount that could be saved by choosing the lower-cost alternative,” the researchers said.
