Doxycycline can induce oesophagitis

YOUNGER patients presenting with painful swallowing should be asked whether they’re on doxycycline, as it can cause oesophagitis, a Queensland pathologist says.

Dr Ian Brown, from Envoi Specialist Pathologists in Brisbane, says the antibiotic is increasingly being prescribed in young patients with acne, STIs or respiratory tract infections.

In these patients, symptoms such as odynophagia or dysphagia can be misdiagnosed as reflux because drug side-effects are not commonly considered in younger people.
