Draft transplant guidelines need doctor input

In a bid to reduce the number of people on transplant waiting lists, poorer quality organs can be allocated to patients who have not previously been seen as good candidates, the document suggests.

The NHMRC draft, Ethical Guidelines for Organ Transplantation from Deceased Donors, provides case studies in an attempt to pragmatically help the decision-making process.

Professor Ian Olver, chairman of the guidelines committee, stressed the importance of transparency in these guidelines.
