A study shows only 25 patients have been diagnosed between 1996, when the state was declared hydatid-free, and 2012, with all patients being linked to high-risk exposures such as sheep farming.

No evidence was found of hydatid transmission in this period, but patients could be expected to continue to present with symptoms related to cysts, and the threat of outbreaks remains, the researchers said.
