E-health records show benefit for diabetes patients

US researchers examined the records for nearly 170,000 patients aged older than one year in the Kaiser Permanente diabetes clinical registry before and after staged introduction of an e-health records system from 2005 to 2008.

No change was found in the number of doctor office visits, but emergency visits declined 5.5% annually and hospitalisation for any condition declined 5.2% annually after the system’s introduction.
